ASUR confirms commitment to promoting economic development in the region

Cancún, Quintana Roo, February 16th, 2009.- Routes Americas 2009 was officially inaugurated this morning, kicking off two days of intense negotiation between representatives of airports from across the Americas and airlines from practically all over the world, who were in Cancún for the second year running to take part in this key event.

The inauguration ceremony was presided over by the Governor of the State of Quintana Roo, Félix González Canto, and speeches were also given by the Minister for Tourism, Rodolfo Elizondo Torres; Mr. Roger Carter, Vice President Regional Events at Routes; and the host of the event and C.E.O. of ASUR, Mr. Fernando Chico Pardo.

Representatives of more than 75 airports and more than 45 airlines from the Americas, Europe and Asia were represented at the event, which had a larger number of participants this year than the previous year. The event has gone a long way to positioning Cancún, the Riviera Maya and México in general among decision-makers throughout the international aviation industry.

It is projected that by the time this event is over tomorrow, around 2,000 business meetings will have been held between the different participants, resulting in steps to develop new air routes, increase capacity on existing routes and consolidate pre-existing agreements.

By organizing this event in Cancún, it is ASUR’s intention to showcase the potential of this tourist destination and, at the same time, to confirm its commitment to economic development in the southeast of Mexico, as well as promoting the development of new routes in different parts of the Americas.

Also present at the inaugural ceremony for Routes Americas 2009 were the following distinguished guests: the governors of the states of Veracruz, Mr. Fidel Herrera Beltrán, and Yucatán, Ms. Ivonne Ortega Pacheco, as well as the Minister for Communications and Transport, Mr. Luis Téllez Kuenzler, and the Director of the Mexican Tourism Promotion Board (CPTM), Mr. Oscar Fitch Gómez.
